I've had to do that before, myself. One derby allowed welding the trunk, the other only chain. I used a torch, and cut at a shallow angle. Take your time, and it should come out half way nice. You'll get lots of slag, that needs to be broken. I just went along with a hammer, and smacked the cuts, after they cooled. Then use a big screwdriver or pry bar, and pry up along the seams. You'll see if there's anymore cutting to be done. I guess if you were good with a grinder, you could they that also.

Use a circular saw with a metal cutting disc.Noisy but effective.Cutting beside the weld is usually easier. mark |

Yeah, weld is stronger than the metal. You dull the blade alot quicker cutting welds. Plasma cutters work great too.

concrete saw with an abrasive blade for metal it will cut fast. The reason i say for metal is they make the same blade but it will say masonry on it.Both will work but the metal blades are a little better. The blades are only a few bucks a piece too. They will cut reagular steel, stainless steel,rerod,#9 wire, chain, anything that it will touch it will probably cut.

carbon arc gouge is the correct way. i think a cutting torch at an angle towards the plate would be the most painless.

A friend of mine, was working on the farms tractor, inside the shop. The grinder wheel broke, and part of it went up about 15', and stuck in the tin roof! Now it leaks there, in the rain.LOL But luckly, he didn't get hit by anything. And he usually does.LOL

I used to work for a buddy that owned a welding/machine shop and he had this old grinder that I swear would almost torque itself out of your hands just when you started it up.

It has a gun lead like a stick welder does... It takes a solid carbon rod, you hook it to a large stick welder (the work lead) and hook an air hose to it. Crank your amps up good, turn your air on and obliterate iron... virtually no grinding required. It is a little touchy and takes some getting used to, but if you need to get rid of a lot of steel/weld quick, its the way to go.

A friend of mine used to work as a welder for big construction vehicles, and he used one on a fairly regular basis. From what I hear, pretty awesome.

I think it would be hard to remove a lot of weld/iron with a plasma cutter... I used the Carbon Air-Arc Gouger at work the other day, thats why I thought of it. They are pretty wicked to use.

You get a big enough plasma cutter and she'll take off whatever you want. I got a friend who has one that will slice through 1" steel like it's butter.

And for that you only have to have a small plasma cutter for the job. But for a good one you are still talking $1000 +. For that you can get a good cut-off wheel,a torch, and a cheap chop-saw.

I have a small one. The same size as my 135 Hobart welder. I like it alot better than torches for "precision cuts". |

Hell yes Jeff! They cut way faster, way easier, and with a lot less heat. Not to mention little or no slag. Ain't nothing like slicing threw metal and picking it up 10 seconds afterwards.

Plasma cutters are fricken awesome. I weld my doors shut w/ 3" X 1/8" strap iron, and instead of buying the strap for more money, I would just buy a 4' X 8' X 1/8" sheet and slice the whole thing up with a plas cutter in like 20 mins and I'd have enough strap to do like 3-4 cars. Gary, yes they will cut thru a car frame no problem. The smaller ones I used, sounds very similar to the one Jeff is using, would cut thru 1/2" plate w/o any problems.
