I want to change the rag joint to a u-joint, but I can't find a place that sells u-joints locally (tried NAPA and Carquest). Does anybody know of any places that would carry them???

Don't waste your time , just go to a junk yard and look for a minivan use the section that hooks between the column and the rack system . If all else fails go to your farm & home store and get a PTO universal . They have them in different sizes .

The hard thing about that is, matching up the splines. You can either count the splines and measure the size of the shaft on the gear box, then there are several sites that sell them for different racing applications, but they are a little expensive... OR, grab a u-joint like Shorty said, and I cut apart the rag-joint and weld the splined piece to the u-joint you bought. Like this... works very well.

I put a universal on my steering like your picture showed. My front end got bent so high that the universal was on the frame...couldn't steer anymore...but it got me second place though.
1 car 1 derby and off to the scrap yard she goes!

Well... there is a point where stuff bends so far that it doesn't really matter what you've got it either breaks or binds... sounds like you hit that point. Good job on the 2nd place!

If you go to www.smacrapderby.com and click on event pictures, go 4 rows down and 8 pictures to the right, that is what was left of my car (#25). The picture to the left is the guy that won. The picture to the right took 4th.
