Lifting a Torsion Bar Suspension

Complements, John Brophy

A quick and easy way to get bumper height and tire clearance on a car with a torsion bar suspension.

For better detail, click on the pictures for larger versions.

Jack up the car and place jack stands under the frame for safety.
Climb under the car and locate the height adjusting bolt (it's circled in white on this picture). Turning this bolt clockwise (tightening) raises that side of the car, turning the bolt counter-clockwise (loosening) lowers that side of the car. This pict shows the pass. side of the car (and this side is not jacked up.. you have to jack up the side your working on).. The bolt isn't too hard to find, it runs right into the lower control arm of the front suspension.
A closer look. A word of advise. It is my suggestion to make the height of the front and rear of your car equal. Also, remember, high bumpers nail radiators and get stuck on low bumpers!
