Thermostat Tips

Complements, John Brophy

Simple and straight forward.. A great way to run the motor cooler..

Complements of member Frank Ekstam: Simple and straight forward. Take any thermostat and a dremel, tin snips, pliers or whatever and cut out the areas marked in black in the pic. An acetylene torch can be used but is not recommended, as indicated, the gas piston will explode (a small explosion, but an explosion nonetheless).

John Brophy here, I want to add something to this..

#1) DO NOT RUN without the thermostat in!! You WILL overheat.. The thermostat is not just there to shut off coolant flow, it also keeps the flow from going to fast.. If the coolant runs around the block and the rad to fast, it won't have time to pick up the heat and drop it off in the radiator. Also, fast flowing coolant will leave hot spots in the heads, which isn't good.

#2) I had a hard time cutting the holes, so I just drilled out the metal Frank suggests you cut out..

Rich Hancock  also had a good idea: Take a peice of tin (i.e from the hood or elsewhere) and cut the outside the same as the thermostat O.D. Then drill a 5/8 hole in the middle. I've tried bigger and smaller but the 5/8 hole works the best.

Good Luck!
