Seat Brace!

Complements: John Brophy

Every rookie learns in the first 10 seconds of his/her first derby, that the driver's seat doesn't hold "up" for very long. Here's a simple and easy way to brace it up -- using supplies you'd usually toss in the trash!

For better detail, click on the pictures for larger versions.

Cut out the center passenger's lap belt.. You want a belt that is long, and has the adjustable buckle (the kind you pull the tail to tighten it up).. When you cut it out, cut it as close to the floor as possible, the longer it is, the better.. You also have to make SURE the adjustable buckle works (it's the key to the whole tip).
This is the kinda buckle I'm talking about.
Sometimes you'll need to make the strap longer. If your belt isn't long enough, cut out another belt and cut off the buckle (all you need is the strap). You can't just tie the two ends together, they will pull apart when you get hit. I like to tie a knot that makes a loop that closes when you pull the end of the knot. You'll need to make one of these loops on the end of one belt (with the LONG tail of the knot being the tail that closes the loop), then make the same type of loop, on the other belt, inside the loop of the first belt (see next pict). When you're done, as you pull the long ends of both knots, both loops close on each other. Once their closed, they cannot come apart.
Here's what I mean buy "a loop in a loop"..
Or you can use the buckle.. Again, an over-hand knot wont cut it. You gotta make a knot that get's tighter as the tension on the strap get's tighter (another closing loop would work).
Situate the adj. buckle so that about 1 foot of the "pull to tighten end" is sticking out. What I mean by that is -- when you have one of these buckles under tension, when you pull the end to tighten the strap, only ONE end of the strap will pull and stay (its not the end you cut off the floor). Insert the adj. buckle into the front pass. stock buckle receiver, then run the strap behind the driver's seat, and up to the driver's roof post. The next pict might help.
Another view.
Now wrap the belt around the roof post as many times as possible. Try to do this as TIGHT as possible (tight wrappings AND tight belt between the roof post and the pass. belt buckle). Leave yourself enough strap to tie it off. You can use an over-hand knot here (the wrapping of the belt is what carries the load, not the knot).. Once it's all tied off, grab that 1ft tail of belt you left yourself on the adj. buckle, and PULL LIKE HELL (this is the secrete of the WHOLE concept).. This allows you to get that brace tight enough to play guitar on it. Thousand times tighter then you ever could have tied it.
Here's the completed system looking through the rear windshield.
