Rear Chaining Tips

Complements: John Brophy

Can't use ready rod.. Do this. Keeps the rear together, and REALLY helps it to bend up. My personal *best* tip.

For better detail, click on the pictures for larger versions.

I hope this pict is self explanatory. Basically you're looking at a trunk that the last foot has been cut off. The chaining process goes like this: cut holes in the trunk floor on each side of each frame rail (cut these holes as far rearward as possible -- dictated NOT ONLY buy the trunk floor, but also by the lid). Ok, so that's four holes in the floor. Now cut 4 holes in the trunk lid, DIRECTLY above the 1st four holes. Run chain as shown, tighten down with threaded rod. The tighter the better, and YES you MUST use rod and tighten like hell on BOTH sides! The chaining shown here is what I call the triple X -- the chains cross three times.
Here's Gunthers idea, the the chains through the rear fenders!! It would do a good job of holding the trunk lid down, and inbetween the fenders.. I still think the other basic loop is still needed half way up.
Here is an easier chaining method, only one cross, and a little less thinking is required. Same number of holes in the car.
Ok.. So now you ask -- how do run these chains like this inside a closed trunk.. Easy. The following is for the single X setup, you should be able to figure out the triple X. In this picture you are looking in the OPEN trunk, at the floor, from the back bumper. The lines are chain, the green numbered dots are just there to denote the individual chain ends. Lay your chains out on the trunk floor like this.
Ok.. Now your looking at the underside of the OPEN trunk lid (see the rear license plate?). The green lines are string. Tie the end of string one to the end of chain one, so on and so forth. Once you've tied all four ends, close the trunk, and carefully pull the chains up through the holes. Pull them tight by hand, then install your rod, and tighten till there's no tomorrow.
Here are the holes in the trunk lid/quarter panel.
Close up of holes on right side. The extra holes (the one in the lid above the two, and the one in the quarter panel) are there for a basic loop of chain.. This keeps the lid from buckling in the middle.
Here are the holes in trunk floor.
Loose chains in place.
Close up of chains in place w/ threaded rod.
My rod setup, double washers both sides.
Car all tightened down and ready to rock and roll!
