Demolition Derby Setup List

This list is provided as a general guideline to assist in 'remembering' those things which can easily be forgotten when prepping a car for a derby. Some items may NOT be applicable to your area, and you may have others that you use which you may wish to share with us. The timelines are also general, you may wish to do some things at a different time than indicated here.

General Items

Remove Rear Seat Remove Carpet
Remove Sun-visors Remove door interior. Leave windows in for now.
Remove Headlights Remove Taillights
Remove Turn-Signals and turn signal lever. Remove all chrome (except windshield. If your rules require you to keep the windshield, keep the chrome around it to keep from cracking the glass.)
Remove all wiring to above Remove Headliner
Empty washer fluid container Check Fluid Levels
Remove heater hoses if rules require.. if not, run the heater during the race). Remove front fender X-bracing if they  might hit the distrib if they break.
Tie plug wires away from  exhaust manifold Beat front of hood down (Curve Down)
Get tires Screw Tires onto rims (3/4 12's -- 3/16 bit)
Remove all unnecessary vacuum Lines Check for Vacuum Leaks Pull all unused fuses
Remove all extra wiring Re-route air cleaner pathway
Remove Starter Kill (Park Kill) Install electric fan? - if not using stock fan.
Drill hole in thermostat - change thermostat. Remove hood latch mechanism
Wrap electrical system in Plastic Widen Front/Rear Wheel Wells (Flange OUT)
Lock Rear Wrap radiator in chicken wire.
Chain Down Motor Bypass Transmission oil cooler
INSTALL Transmission OIL COOLER (if allowed) Pound up front/rear fender wells for clearance
Move Battery (GOOD GROUND, watch for hot spots!) Remove stock gas tank
Install 5gal gas Install Shifting Mechanism & Lock out stock shifter
Install firewall and safety case. Bolting down the hood (if possible)
Cut hole in hood over radiator cap Check threaded rod inventory for enough rods.
Duct tape radiator hoses Chain down transmission
Move Starter Solenoid (possibly install 2) Move any electronic boxes if necessary
Cut hole in firewall behind distributor (if needed)  
Loosen bumper bolts and relocate bumper high as possible Cutoff bumper ends and leave them good and sharp
Check driver’s lap belt Water proof electrical couplings
Clamp leafs Jack up torsion bars (if applicable)

After Storage // Before Race

Beat in Fender Edges & wheel wells Cut hole in hood over carb.
Remove all rear-view mirrors .
Remove Side Windows Remove Door Windows
Remove Rear Glass Glue Plug wires on
Cut holes in hood/trunk for chain Tape Windshield
Wrap Seat Belts Up the idle
Tighten fan belts Remove Emergency Brake Cable
Clean out entire Car Clean Plugs
Remove Trunk Springs Mark ply rating
Re-enforce drivers seat Grease/replace U-joints

Night before race

Tighten fan belts Check Fluid Levels
Properly Inflate Tires Charge Batteries
Remove remainder of exhaust .

At Race Track

Remove Hood Springs Tie down radiator overflow hose & empty container
Strap down hood Strap down trunk
Cut Frame (??) Secure Doors
Tape key in ignition Ax Cut Rear Fenders (??)
Pad roof post Chain Rear to Package Tray
Grease/Oil the side walls of tires Pad driver's door
Cover Battery .

Extra Good Ideas

Put a bead of weld around the lip of each rim Mount tubes in tires with valve stems on the inside
Flip manifolds if possible Clean and Armor All Tires
Blow out fuel line with compressed air Replace or remove fuel filter
Clean carburetor with spray cleaner Wire choke wide open
Hook up wire hand throttle cable Install new/clean spark plugs, distributor cap and wires
Duct tape or glue wires on distributor cap Change Oil - use 1 quart Slick 50 (or equivalent)
Weld brace around tire valves Retard timing 10 degrees
